THE ARTS SOCIETY
NORTH YORKSHIRE AND SOUTH DURHAM
Loving the Arts?
We are a friendly society offering a wide variety of excellent lectures on a range of subjects, including art and design, architecture and garden design, music and fashion. All our talks are presented by Arts Society lecturers accredited for their subject knowledge and enthusiastic presentation skills.
We are an active society that organises study days, outings of special interest, visits to galleries and exhibitions and residential tours in the UK and abroad, all creating the opportunity to socialise and make new friends while sharing a love of the arts.
Founded by Patricia Fey in 1968, The Arts Society was originally the National Decorative & Fine Arts Society (NADFAS). It is an arts-based charity with over 350 societies world-wide and 90,000 members. Each society is run independently by volunteers, having a Head Office in London. We share collective values which are to promote the advancement of arts education and appreciation and to support the preservation of our artistic heritage.

LETTER FROM OUR CHAIR
I hope you are all well and keeping safe. Events have been moving at a tremendous pace with restrictions put in place in an attempt to contain the spread of the coronavirus. Social isolation is desperately hard for us all, but we must try to remain optimistic and to keep in touch with family and friends by phone, email and other means. I am telephoning two people everyday - particularly to ‘check’ on people who, like me, live on their own. We must remain positive and hopefully we will all come through this safely.
National restrictions, closures and cancellations have impacted on our Arts Society. We have had to cancel our Lecture Programme from March through to September 2020. Rita Smith, our Programme Organiser, has planned some double lectures for September and November 2020, which will involve two different lecturers and a variety of topics. There would be one at 11am, followed by another at 2pm. The 11am lectures would be free to members as would be the 11am Christmas lecture this year, to make up for the cancelled lectures. Details will follow later and we hope you will find this an exciting innovation.
Regrettably, the Study Day on Roman Britain planned for April 2020 has also had to be cancelled. People who have booked for this event will get a complete refund as at this time we feel it is sensible not to reschedule. Your cheques were not banked, so we can either return them to you, or with your permission, they can be shredded.
We will keep you informed about developments regarding the UK Tour to Cardiff and South Wales and whether it will be moved to a later date. Currently the Overseas Tour to Dresden remains unchanged.
On behalf of all the Committee, may I thank you for your support now and in the coming weeks. Our thoughts are with you all at this very challenging time and we look forward to seeing you all again when this crisis has passed.
