Italian Impressions

(Heavily abbreviated; taken from the newsletter!)

St Paul outside the Walls Basilica – empire grandiose; Ninfa – rocky roads but Romantic Ruins and glorious green trees; Landriana – a marchioness’ passion for plants, started with a petunia, now corralled into garden rooms; Bomarzo - water and weathered rocks shaped by Prince Orsini’s philosophy and Mannerist taste; Villa Lante- two cardinals’ passions constructed with green box, grey stone and plashing waters rescued from neglect by enthusiasts; Villa Borghese – Bernini and Canova marble sculptures that seemed alive, paintings of exquisite quality including a Cranach nude Venus with a distinctly provocative hat; Fossanova Abbey in calm creamy limestone with a chorale singing in preparation for a wedding; the seaside at Terracina then wine tasting and finally the theatrical waters and gardens of Villa d’Este and the Roman remains of the Villa Adriana.

All linked together by umbrella pines and Mediterranean cypress trees lining roads including the Appian Way.

Molto grazie, Liz!
